This Must Be It Lyrics

I actually think this song is about a religious experience. She's been a faithful follower for years, and she wants nirvana. It seems rather straightforward to me. "I've been serving for years, patiently, is this as far as you can take me?" Perhaps heaven or whatever isn't what she expected. "Here comes darkness just after noon, waiting for a sign...if I survive I'll worship the moon, something, anything." Maybe it's the end of the world, and she isn't sure what's going on. If her life is spared, she'll worship whatever deity saves her. And then it erupts "This must be it, longed for bliss" the light after darkness comes, her heaven comes. "First it was so quiet, now I know I'm not alone here" she wasn't sure if she was doing it right, but now she knows there IS a heaven, or whatever. Maybe she died somewhere in between there? Lol. "They talk and they dance" gives me images of angels, or deities, or spiritual entities of some sort gathering around her. And she probably has no idea what they are.

You know, now that I think about it, maybe it's about aliens. Like, I could totally flip this around and have it be about her getting abducted. I wouldn't doubt it. I do, however, highly doubt that it's about drugs. Not saying that's wrong, you can interpret it however you like (that's what you're supposed to do) but I just think there's more to it. I also feel that way due to other songs she's written. For example, What Else is There? off of The Understanding could also be taken in a spiritual discovery context, or car accident. And her solo album Fever Ray was mainly about her experience as a mother...yeah, I just don't think it's about drugs.
