i think this song and "okay, i believe you; but my tommy gun don't" (and failure by design, a little) are both jesse's way of both hating the state of mind he has to put himself in to write about what he writes about (he's admittedly a pretty depressed dude) and rebelling against the notion that they're a heart-throb band for teenage girls (ala All-American Rejects) and not legitimate (indie) artists.
at this point in time, they were making really great music, and being overshadowed by jesse's magazine cover appearance.
