It seems to me to be about the band's view on all the negative criticism they got from Minutes to Midnight. A Line that proves this:

I think differently. Maybe they're going back to their old style, but I think the line "I'm getting back what I gave" could be taken differently. I saw it in a different light. It's like Chester and the band gave us all their heart in Minutes to Midnight, and we threw it right back at them and said, "Trash."

"The pain it comes in waves." It really hurt them that we trashed it....

This song makes me feel really bad. I still love it though. I'm not one of the ones that threw it back in their face. I'd stick with LP through any genre. I think the thing with this song is a sad retreat. They're basically saying.
"It was really hard trying to express who are, and you threw it back at us. It really hurt. I guess we asked for it though. But for you, we're going back to the old LP."
I see where you're coming from, but one of the guys said in an interview said that their next album would be half MTM/half Meteora/Hybrid Theory. Most of the MTM half would have a bit of rock in it too though, (In Pieces for example)

I'm with you though, I didn't mind their Minutes to Midnight stuff at all except for some of the singles getting old. Hands Held High-TLTGYA are some of LP's best work, though I do still like their earlier stuff more.

I agree with pastachickennugget42 It's talking about all the negative remarks the band got with MTM, but in reality MTM was a GREAT album!
