I found it a bit interesting how the lyrics kind of jump tense every once in a while. Or it could be my hearing the words wrong. Rocky relationship, one person going in and out, and the other accepting things as they come, up until the other person finds someone new. The person who was left alone believed the relationship would always be there, if they were in or if they were out, even though he was the person being left. He never believed she'd go so far as finding someone new. But she did, and he was "lost."
If the tense had anything to do with it, I'd say they go through that sort of thing a lot. Enough to be confused of where they stand at some points.
