To me, this song deals with the inevitable flow of relationships (not necessarily romantic) throughout life. The singer is so jaded he no longer sees this as within his control, but simply as a working of "fate".

"Is it worth the things you lose To board the train and watch the sky" I see this as referring to an inexorable desire to abandon the past, abandon connections, and focus only only the infinite flow of time, the sky. But is it worth it?

The song then delves into a prior relationship, the ravages of which leave the singer consoling himself through song each night. However, every song is about 'the rain'- both in his head and on the radio. The rain, to me, is the multitude of sorrows every person must face, mounting up on the singer in a vicious storm. Not just the sorrows of an individual, but those of everyone.
