He could be shrugging it off, meaning "It's alright, whatever," glad to be out of the relationship and not drinking his life away, it could be "It's alright, you don't have to be an angel, you can be yourself," or it could be "It's alright, I'll just suffer through this empty love because everyone else is probably the same."
