When it's followed by "it gets hard, there's no use denying", it's like Ashcroft is trying to tell God that life is difficult, and he can't help that.

Oh I know that I'm holding on but I've got time to grow" because it's as though you've got to try on all of these different personalities and see all of these different things, and as you're doing this, you're still holding on to the core of everything you believe in even if it appears that you're not, but you have time for personal growth even if eventually that might mean growing away from the things you once believed.
