I think it's about him in this relationship that he knows is losing it's fire. He knows the girl is losing interest and he can see it clearly. But he knows it's going to kill him inside, and he'd rather live with the ignorance and pretend like everything's going to be okay because it's just too painful to face the reality that the one he loves is leaving him.
