I have to disagree about the song meaning with the general populous. While it may have to do with high school type scenario's, I believe it may be speaking of persons who are afraid of what they want to do to those who mis-treat them.

I like to think that most people (high school students included) have an innate trend to know right from wrong. Now, if you think of this song as one who hates the way he is treated (let's be honest, even though people know right from wrong, they can still be A**holes) and wants to get his vengeance.

Take a look at this segment:

"Out of his mind the way pushes him, whispering Must have been out of his mind Midday delusions of pushing this out of his head Make him out of his mind (out of his mind)"

Delusions making him go insane? Imagine if you had such a moral constitution to not harm someone, yet you desperately wanted to exact revenge on those who caused you agony.

So... What if he snaps? It would go against everything he stood for. Which is why he may be "terrified of what's inside". Since it's a mental battle, he's "all alone" in his struggle. Ergo, his mental battle of right and wrong may be him crawling from the bird like the worm.
