I think who the song is about has been through an awful lot of anguish and bad times, and during this song realises he's hit a new all- time and ultimate low in life. The only way is up as they say, and a big realisation ensues alng with a bright light at the end of a very long dismal tunnel. This has always been my interpretation of it anyway.
