I think, and this is just a huge assumption on my part, that maybe he was talking about Leo McCarey. He wrote, directed, and produced a 1939 romance film called Love Affair that was nominated for most of the major Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Writing, and Best Original Story, and I'm guessing Alex is saying something along the lines of, "Even if I can't create the best love story"...maybe? Honestly, no idea, but this is my best guess at the moment.
