First I would like to offer a different point of view on this song/album.
In relation to the other songs of this album, here we are witness to a story of ones life as it unfolds. This song is like a preface in the authors life and the story continuing with the rest being that of the other songs on the album.
In this song the author is coming to terms with regrets, disappointments and failings within himself. A turning point in his life where he is beginning to break free of the past, to shed ones own skin and start on the path of being. This is more than a song lyric, its a story, a book, a peek into the authors life as he evolves from what he was into what he wants to become. This whole album tells a story.
"Full of grief I scream at the wind"
Here he has come to terms and is accepting his failures and limitations, his weakness's. Even though there are no walls he feels imprisoned by not only society and social norms, but by his own self.
"Thought I heard the words of others"
He thought he was ok fitting in with society and was fine with just being another sheep.
"Imprison myself And stay in a shell"
He realizes that by conforming to a hypocritical society, he has limited himself, compromised his own beliefs and integrity. By pleasing others and conforming to social norms, living by what others say you 'should' and 'shouldn't' do, he has trapped himself inside a limited box so to speak, much like a turtle's shell.
"I won't let you in to have a story to tell"
He is seeing people for what they truly are, gossiping hypocrites and is now refusing to simply be a pawn or puppet.
"Things tend to drag me down, Don't understand so they hate me now"
He is human and still vulnerable to human emotions, thoughts and feelings. Those who are not capable of empathy show only contempt or hatred towards him and others like him.
"My fear grips the will of stone, My fear grips I'll die alone"
These lyrics are printed wrong, i have submitted feedback to have them fixed.
"I promised myself somewhere in the teenage life, I'd never submit to the ones I will not be like"
Realizing at a young age, He vows to better himself and not repeat the actions of those whom he chooses not to emulate.
"Live in a hole, But stay close to my kind, Cause they understand what burns in my mind"
He may not have everything in life monetarily, but he has stability and identity and the respect of the few that have taken the time to empathize and understand him.
"I still feel incomplete"
He is just starting to come into his own, he has his identity and knows now what he wants.
"Friends are few and far between"
Most people are fake and are not genuine, nor deserving of his friendship or loyalty. Few are at the same level he is and have earned his respect. The sheep are many...the Sheppard's are few by comparison.
I hope you have enjoyed my interpretation. This album is amazing on so many levels. Lyrically, musically, historically. A peek into the thoughts and development of many teen heavy metal males of this era.
