Due to my current situation, I'm taking it in the sense that the guy doesn't want the last piece to fall away, therefore he's backing away from it all to save what's left of their friendship... Even though he wants to be with her. And how she's most likely found some other guy, and even though he knows it was for the best, he can't do it.
