According to the Lead Singer/Songwriter, the song is actually about a conversation between himself and God. He wrote it during a time in his life when he was dealing with his grandfather's death if I remember correctly.
To me personally, when I hear the song I think about everything I've lost and the song almost becomes sarcastic. It's still a "conversation with God" but when I'm singing along with it it takes on a sort of mocking, bitter quality in my mind. It's like I'm saying "Yea, I've taken everything you've thrown at me and I'm STILL standing. Come on, life's not hard enough you bastard! Take Everything!"
I've actually stopped singing along to this song for the most part. It's among my favorite songs of all time, but I'm not sure it's the message I'd like to send along just in case there is a god out there, lol.
