This is an allegorical tale of a marriage ending.

I have to agree. It seems as though he is realizing this as each verse concludes. I would be interested in what you think he may have been speaking to in the last verse.

The "spacecraft" could be the news of an affair by his spouse, or perhaps an epiphany that the relationship is over that seemed to come from another world. After the realization the protagonist is left alone with the reality of what has happened and was "left on the ground" alone to ponder the fact.

He is asking his new woman, or God, or his own inner self:
