I think the song points out how one must learn to be open to find out how much in common he/she has with others to form strong relationships so no one will be alone. It elaborates on how sometimes relationships effect others and yourself in the process. People can be brutally honest and mess things up for a while but if he/she finds someone with common ground then he/she won't be alone or insecure about who they are because they know there are others like them...however it also tells us if we are not open with ourselves or others then we won't like anyone around ur or ourselves. Therefore never wanting to try for anything simply because we expect something different.
