I feel like everyone here missed the point.
The title is blatant sarcasm, and the chorus is pointing out the futility of so many peace demonstrations and "protests".
Protest Songs in response to military aggression. Protest songs to try and stop the soldier's gun. But the battle raged on.
Singing a song in some hippy-ville like Ithaca, NY isn't going to get anyone to put their rifles down in Iraq or anywhere else.
