The first time I heard this song was just after my father passed away. It fit like no other song could at the time. To me it is almost follows ones acceptance that they are going to die. I came to this conclusion when I related it to my father, he had been sick for a long time and was in pain. The first verse of the song just made me think of how he was emotionally during his last months and how he decided to live life until the end. The second verse when it says " I leave myself behind in pieces" makes me think of how one will leave his or her body after death and go on in spirit. And lastly the "I'll never see again" bridge section is just acceptance of the inevitable and how they just can't fight anymore.
I don't know if this is what is meant but either way it is a truly beautiful song that allows one's mind to wonder and remember.
