The ironic thing is that the guy was the person who finally convinced jay to stop being so cynical ("anti-misanthrope") and succeeded in opening up his heart again or whatever to a serious relationship (even if the guy wasn't actively courting him).
To put it simply: It's unrequited love from someone who didn't want to fall in love in the first place with a guy he didn't even like as a person.
