i tend to think of this song as a lamentation of those times when we just refuse to spend time with God (prayer, reading His Word, etc.). i also think it goes back in forth in perspective because the first verse sounds like Jesus telling us not to settle for earthly pleasures, but most of the song, including the chorus and bridge, sounds like a person crying out for the joy and eternal perspective that come with fellowship with God.
