This song is Derek's response to a pastor who was describing heaven in a "sermon" where he basically described it as you and all your friends from this life singing those good ole hymns and having fun in heaven. So Derek decided to write a song describing this guy's (and many people's) vision of heaven in more detail (and honesty). He basically suggests that if heaven was like this, then we would have classes and division in heaven (poor and rich/have and have-nots) and in that way it would be a lot like earth right now (hence the stores and parking lots that come up often in the song). We would all be happy with our friends insulated from all the other people (even Jesus).
Its also a challenge to see the injustice of this world through this guy's vision of heaven (which really isn't heaven of course) and to try and to realize that we are supposed to be part of the making right all things here and now.
