"Breaking Hearts was inspired by a girl I dated in high school
who had been in a previous relationship with a guy who got what
we wanted sexually out of her and then left.
I have seen this act multiple times and it breaks my heart.
It's not a game, it's a real person with real feelings.
I felt so sick by the whole situation that I felt the need to write about it.
I say "I was hoping that we were meant to be" because I wanted to be a
light in her dark world. In the second chorus, when I say
"I was hoping that HE wasn't gonna say this," I'm referring
to the guy who got what he wanted out of her.
The idea is that I wish HE hadn't said whatever he
said to convince her that he was a catch. "I can't afford
to let my feelings go" because I can't ignore this situation;
this may be my only chance to prove myself to this girl who
I cared so much about at the time. But with so many selfish/deviant guys,
it's hard to tell when you can and can't trust one. I wanted this song
to perhaps be a warning to vulnerable people who will encounter
these situations.. Or if someone can relate to this song from past experience,
(which I hope more than anything that they can't relate) they have a song
that tells their story- and they are not alone."
