I think this song may be about a girl leaving him, and him being alone

But if there's nothing left to hold" meaing she left him alone and now he
has nothing to hold, and when he says "Let the angels take a soul" he's meaning
his cause he has nothing left so pretty much no reason to live. that's just my guess
on this song. but i could be wrong. :) anyways great song.
