To me this song talks about two friends who are falling for each other, but one is afraid of ruining the friendship by taking it further, since there is the chance of it not working out-which may mean the possibility of the friendship as well.

In other words, giving up on something deeper to hold onto the security of not losing a really close friend. The teething side line is kind of confusing, but I kind of interpreted it as that person being still immature and because of it is giving up on something that could be wonderful.
