this song is as direct as can be - he's just talking about how he feels about his split with organized Christianity. i've inferred this because i feel the same way. he's saying that while the message of Christianity is beautiful, the way it's carried out is hypocritical and wrong. while the Church says "love everyone," they still discriminate. he says "that man was love and not an act" because we shouldn't have to carry out specific acts to reach eternal salvation, we should only need to have love in our hearts. it's not about him covering for a sin he committed or how he smoked weed; it's simply about how he views the Church and his break with organized Christianity.
