I don't think you need to be a grammar teacher to write songs. James is no naive or uneducated songwriter, he displays quite an extended range of language choices in his songs, I'm sure he wrote that kind of line because it fit the song's melodic structure, that's all. And yeah I think it's about themselves: they're basically saying: yeah, keep hating us and telling us we've sold out and thrown our own legacy and story in the garbage, but we're still standing and strong.
