This song kinda sounds like a modern rendition of the story of Jacob and Rachel in Genesis chapters 29-31. Jacob had to work for his Uncle Laban for many many years so that he could marry Rachel, and he stuck with it even when Laban cheated him.
"(How's that for a compliment girl?
How's that for a compliment?)"
It's a compliment, because it shows how much Jacob loved Rachel.
"But I never cracked and never gave you up
I just did my time for you"
He never gave up, and just completed his.. 14? years of service
"Yeah, I can't leave you now
Yeah, I got nowhere to go anyhow"
Jacob is unable to go back home because Esau hates him, and he doesn't want to leave Rachel.
"When you sleep, don't dream of me
I don't want to break your heart 'til I'm breaking free
When I get out I'm gonna run with ya
We're gonna make our way to America"
Not gonna say this works perfectly, but when he finally runs away from Laban and his service, he takes Rachel (and Leah) along with him to Canaan.
"They can call me public enemy
Brand my skin for treachery
What they long to have
They cant take away from me
My hope is going by the power of love
The highest wall that they erect is not a prison enough
And like a river that is running takes it water to sea
The only ending that is fitting is you and me baby"
This is probably the least fitting part.. but ehh, after Jacob runs away, Laban does take a posse after him and accuses him of breaking his promises. In the end, though, Laban is not allowed by God to stop Jacob. Thus, Jacob eventually succeeds through the power of love. And stuff. Yes.
And this isn't what the band says is the interpretation.. so yea :/
