For myself, personally, this song is beautifully bittersweet b/c it makes me think of my oldest sister. She essentially had to forfeit her childhood to our father. Essentially, they had an agreement where if she kept silent about his sexual abuse of her, he wouldn't do the same to the 3 younger sisters. She sacrificed her first 21 years in order for her sisters to escape the monster's madness. She was around age six when the abuse first began, but our father didn't tell us the truth until 35 years later. Some of the words & lyrics Madonna wrote in this song never fail to make me think of my sister's childhood & what she surrendered in order for us to escape the abuse.
