i think this song is talking about war in a sarcastic way.

With endless day, and reservation
Saddest girls who will await while
Dying inside, how will they get by?"
seems like he's sarcastically saying that war is a vacation.
i also think it's about the soldiers wifes and girlfriends will eventually "let it go" and forget while the soldiers are still out fighting for their lives.
Reading it over it seems like that is the story which is presented. Perhaps I am more critical though. Being a musician though, I find that song meanings are generally fairly broad fora reason.
