I don't think Vampires is quite what John was thinking of when writing this song.

By saying that the infection is "Blessed" it is implying that religion is the infection. Throughout the album believers of religion and non believers are referenced to having or not having a reflection. An example of this is in "No God," there is a lyric that says "There's no salvation in a world where you worship your reflection." In this song "There's nowhere to run from the one with no reflection." Implies implies that religion is a falsehood spread by people with the same infectious idea. I think that John compares religion to an infection because it is an easy way for people to think about their world. It is easy to say that there is an invisible guy in the sky that loves us, wants to teach us lessons and to live a good life. Human beings are constantly looking for the easiest way of doing things and religion is the easiest way of understanding life. In contrast it is hard and kind of scary to think critically and logically about existence. Easy to understand ideas spread like infection through the laypeople of our society.
