I think that some of you got it half right. this song is not just about death in general. its about a guy who wakes up to find his girl-friend dead beside him. "stoned I awoke to your temple of blackness above you, and death beside me, where kitchen knives conspire razor blades make bloodless love- LIKE MURDER" his reference to the pale girl is the memory of her, pale and dead, following him to the sea means it'll haunt him the rest of his life. its made even more obvious with the line "i burrow through the dust in your skull, but I cannot seem to find your soul... nothing is true and I'm tired of your sad today..." come on people she killed herself. Does the song make any better sense? pretty messed up isn't it?
but awesome tho...
She committed suicide (with knives and razor blades), and first he is dismayed (burrowing through the dust in her skull but can't find her soul = life force) but then decides to end it himself. That's when they're both cold and numb, orbiting the sun. He's experiencing out-of-body experiences as he's dying. I think the reptiles and locusts are dying hallucinations, both of which are grotesque and morbid. The way he kills himself is by drowning in the sea, with the memory/ghost of her following him, waiting for him.

"Nothing is true...
"Nothing is true and I'm tired of your sad today" - trying to come to terms with her death, this is describing the denial stage
"You're screaming because there's nothing left for you to say" - I think this describes her body or skeleton, her mouth is left open but obviously she can't speak because "there's nothing left to say" since she's dead. This is when he realizes and comes to term with her death and the futility of his own life.
It actually seems like an even more morbid tale of Romeo and Juliet.
