It does seem to be about bad music, but I think it's more than that.
They talk about the various ways in which people think that they can better their lives, or various ways in which people think they'll be happy. Like, "I'll be happier if I can lose a pound or two" and things like that. How people focus on these ridiculous, minor, superficial things, and starve their heart and soul for it.
So I think it's less about bad pop music, and more about how people listen to things they're told to listen to, or like what they're told to like, and how people feel hemmed in by the status quo even to the point of liking certain types of music.
For me, it doesn't read bitter, just sad -- and then, with the "Well, fuck that!" a little defiant. They're not going to go down without a fight, and neither should anyone else.
