I look at this song in the context of the album and Dylan's life. First of all Together For Life implies the overall theme of the album is a love that has lasted through it all. Second, the album's inspiration mostly came from border towns in Texas/Mexico, very metaphorical for an ending "beyond which lies nothing".

Thinking about Dylan's life, the only love that has lasted through the years (many women have come and gone) is his love for music, something that has never and will never abandon him. They have been "together through life".

I feel this song is more of a realization that there is not much left. He is in the proverbial sunset of his career or to keep with the albums symbolism, he is reaching the borders with his music. Hence, nothing but the mountains of the best, beyond here there is "nothing we (him and music) can call their own.

I feel this song is an all time great for Dylan.
