I think you all are putting it into a small box by saying it's just about religion. I get the feeling the first line pretty much sums it up 'modernism'. It's about a multitude of things; Material possessions, the stupid hierarchy we have & yes religion. I also think the last line is interesting, he might be saying we all are to vain nowadays, but I would disagree with him (sometimes depending on how I feel) becuase back in day (depending on how far you look) people cared more about who you were/what you have rather than today when you're pretty much your own man/woman (well it's like that where I live :))
