Well not only does it seem to be about giving up on his ex, because the way it sounds, he hasn't given up.
He just can't get over her and it's putting him in a depression where he doesn't care about anything or anyone, including himself anymore.
Most people that end up in a state of depression, don't want to look up (holding your head up)
because they know they'll get shot down everytime. (is hard when you just want to stay on the ground)
