This is a beautiful song. I just heard it (and also found out about Jeremy Messersmith) through the rehearsal/Q&A with Dessa on Doomtree.net... I am really impressed.. this song means so much at once, but at the same time I don't really know WHAT it means too much, I just listen to each line and think to myself "this must mean something special..." but either way it is sung masterfully and I, for one, am addicted.
I just heard this during the rehearsal too! Makes me glad I preordered.
I have vague sense of what it might mean, it definitely feels like there's alot of meaning behind the lyrics.

After listening to this more and more I'm convinced it is a religious song, but I'm not too sure. "I chose water over wine, jars of formaldehyde." I think he is not a religious person and he wishes so bad that he could be, or that he had something like religion to take some of the pain in his life away. I think he sees people who are religious and how much comfort and fulfillment it brings them and he doesn't necessarily want to be religious but he wants something to fall back on like that.

Another thing...
Another thing is "Why'd you make me a scientist" I'm pretty certain means that maybe at one point he believed in a God and something happened to him, something horrible that made him think "There can't be a God. Not like this." That somebody who did that to him made him into a "scientist."

Sound about right?
