I think the note about the historical figures kinda refers to how there are fanatics out looking for signs and traces of these figures. When he says "I can't find" kinda refers how he's a fanatic for these people in the same way he is obsessed in looking for his "love". People who spend years or their whole life looking for signs and traces of these historical figures, is how he is towards this "love" of his.
Part where he mentions them having a party, he believes that they are stil out there... so that illudes to the fact that his "love" must be out there too.
the bridge, how he can't find his watch and wallet, shows how he can't find even the simplest things, so how is he able to search for something as elusive as his true love. Watch and wallet also signifies basic necessities... again saying this person he loves is is a basic necessity too.
The verse where he finds odd jobs... shows that he can do things that doesn't matter... but he still can't find the things that DO matter.
Finally, somewhere to run, somewhere to go... he is looking for a direction to be pointed to. Probably due to frustration... but if he does find her, how would he know? Stating how a true love is elusive and hard to find... even if pointed in the right directions.
