Well, this song is one of my favorites. I think it is all about wanting someone you can't have. I see this song one of two ways. Either he gets marooned on an island and he can see the woman he loves being as upset as he is "kicking and screaming." He is writing his woman messages in bottles and they won't reach her because he sees the bottles "sink to their watery graves" And the choruses are his woman talking to him "will i see you soon my dear?" He isn't alone on the island or maybe he is and the isolation is making him see other people "I thought that i saw you but my imagination was playing tricks on me." If there are other women on the island he is imagining his woman being the women he is stuck with. Also, in the third verse he is rationalizing himself being with these other women.
My second take thanks to the name of the song (Lake Michigan) is that he feels like he is on an island which Michigan is close to being. I feel his love is on the other side of Lake Michigan. The message in the bottles are to this girl who lives far away 10,000 miles and the song itself is the message. However, she will never hear this song so it is just going to its watery grave. The chorus is about seeing his love soon. The second verse is that feeling we get when we are hopelessly in love and seeing the one we love everywhere we go. The third verse is rationalizing being with someone else because the one he wants he can't get. Either way, it is a deep and beautiful song and one of my personal favorites.
