I do agree with some type of force implied, but personally, I think that possibly, she's doing something that's making her happy, but isn't good for her and making her sad when she doesn't get it (Not saying this is the actual 'addiction,' in you will, but an example being smoking.) and she's keeping it a secret from some authority (parent, nurse, ect.) so she can't be upset about it openly, only behind close doors while keeping a front that it doesn't bother her and nothing is going on. The person that she may be hiding it from might try to 'catch' her, but that would require her telling her secret.

She might want to tell someone (a friend), but she might be afraid that they might not believe her or that they might not listen.

That's my own personal interpretation, anyways.
