I kind of get a different feeling from this song. It seems that he had a good relationship with someone, but they left him in a painful way. (whether it be them breaking up or her dying or moving away). But i think it's because of the season because that's when said separation occurred.
It seems to me though, that he doesn't think about it because he's better off without her. "This times for real, we're even" seems to say that they were on and off but now it's over (may he was the one who finally had to let her go).
It sounds like he only misses her on occasion, the rest of the time he realizes that the relationship was painful and not worth it.
I think this song is more about him working through a feeling than the relationship itself. the way the song changes lends to my perception in this way:
first part, sounds and feels like longing missing the person sometimes, he acknowleges that it is a passing feeling from the beginning.
As the song progresses he endulges the want he feels for that person (We do this for the season). He peaks during the part about crossing the desert (he's getting control of himself).
the end I can think of in one of two ways:
He either gets over his sadness and is ready to...

He either gets over his sadness and is ready to rock again, or he goes into a fit cause he can't deal. I think it's the first because he mentions waking up (presumably from the one of those "cirtain days").
