i too think its about his dad, and even if theyre a family he feels like they dont really know each other, theyre strangers who only are a part of each others lives because they are related. he wants to make him proud, but he doesnt feel like he measures up. he wants his dad to know that he really loves them and wishes that he didnt leave. he doesnt want to feel the pain though that his dad is causing, and he is kind of giving up on his dad.
