I don't think this song is romantic at all.

I think most likely, it's God talking to humanity/you. Featherstone mentions footprints in the sand, which is a pretty well-known poem about God's love. The speaker of the song is God, and He sees himself in humanities tears and weakness and dark hours, and is always there with them/us.

At the end of the song, God is saying that someday we'll realize He's with us, and in that moment, we're with Him, too. Slash that's when we go to Heaven.

The first time I listened to the lyrics, I saw it as a deceased parent talking to their child. Especially the line "I see myself in you". To me it was the parent saying, I know it's really hard, and you can't see me, but I'm really there.
