Why do people find it necessary to pull religion into this song? Seriously?
I read another comment where a poster on this forum compared this song to a Ben Harper song called 'Picture in a Frame'. OK --- I have listened to countless interviews with Ben Harper where he emphatically states that he does not believe in religion --- THAT IF ANYTHING --- he writes about the power of believing in something -- that something could be anything ... yet bible-thumpers everywhere are ready to call him their own.
Here's a thought -- instead of putting blind faith into a religion --why not put that faith into yourself -- it's far more productive.
Now -- I was baptized Catholic yet I haven't followed that 'religion' (and I use the term loosely) in over 25 years. Know why? The Catholic Church is good at three things and three things only ---deceit, intimidation and guilt --that's it.
Here's another thought --- where's the almighty God when his soldiers, his communicators ...are raping little boys and stealing their innocence. Oh wait -- God only gives you what you can handle right? And, as we all know, innocent children can obviously handle that kind of abuse.
Look forward to the day that we finally put this little ' fairy tale' to bed and begin living our lives for ourselves .....
I hear ya, but your intense negative reaction actually undermines your credibility. You sound like me 10 years ago, but Ive since realized that religion doesn't make people bad, it's the other way 'round. The church actually does some good things too, I have seen it. The bad things dont negate the good.

Religion can drive people to do bad things, but it doesn't necessarily make THEM bad. One of my best friends doesn't think gays should get married because the bible tells him that marriage is between a man and a woman. He's still a great guy, but his ideas are not so great because of his religion. Anyways, I agree with Cape, that people like to relate songs to their beliefs, and it is being done so many times with this song that I don't think anyone has really given a good idea of the song's meaning. I don't think it's...

I don't think it's about Eddie "coming clean with god", which seems to be the general consensus, but I think it's about an old guy on his deathbed saying that he lived his life the best he could, and he is going to miss his life and his family. Just my interpretation, but I think it's more credible than saying that it's about Eddie thanking a god for his life.. considering he's an atheist.
