I think the song's lyrics critize the notion that there is a specifically human (or humane) essence through which we can relate to the world without any epistomological or moral problems, when in fact we can be moulded to act accordingly to the needs of the powers that be, and then simply repeat out the behavioural patterns for as long as is needed and/or required. This song is the painful realization, the wakening up to that. The "We give in to the atrophy..." - section is especially powerful considering the lyrical context.
