I think it's about isolation. He just stays away (out in the winter, where you won't make it).
But he can't depend on himself entirely, he's maybe a broken soul(child?) and is unable to spread his wings against the sky (facing the world).
He's to young to handle the big scary world on his own. He needs his friends but now he can't reach them because he's to distanced now by his isolation.
