I hear the second verse as something more like "Never comprehending the race had long gone by"

Anyone got any idea what the mesh and lace are about in "Never really knowing it was always mesh and lace" ?

Hmm. Well I think "mesh and lace" may be used to imply that the things that make "the world crash all around your face" are actually quite trivial. Mesh and lace are light, they're delicate.

I think it refers to a woman's veil and is a metaphor for concealment. The singer thought he "saw the world thrashing all around your face", "Never really knowing it was always mesh and lace."

@dcba You and I have the same impressions and questions about this. To your first sentence: yes, that's what I hear too. To your second sentence: I'm wondering about that too. For one, it's apparently a reference to their earlier album. But what does it mean in the song? One idea I had is that mesh and lace are fragile, right, so he didn't realize the world was so fragile? He's struck by how easily the world rips apart (which he can see as he's making love to her during this nuclear blast)?
