"Lost" here can have different connotations...to me, it can either mean lost within his mind (i.e. daydreaming) or lost in love with someone who has hurt him (Personally, I think it's the first one). Either way, both can drastically alter one's persceptions of the world ("This place is not like anything I've seen before") and actually become so pertinent that the person in question will become dependant upon the feeling it brings ("But I wouldn't be happy anywhere else").
