"One day until retirement, it was God's way"

I'm sure this isn't what this song is about, but I imagine this being a tribute to a grandfather, possibly, who smoked and told raunchy jokes. He was in law enforcement and died in duty on the last day of his career. That whole image makes me cry.

"at a show i was at brendan said this song is about victory records. basically, TLA hates them. not the bands, just them."

I wonder how specifically it relates to Victory Records? No matter the subject, it's such a sad song.
