I am beginning with the premise that these guys are Christians. So many of their songs echo Christian truths. Especially this one.

This song is a very artistic presentation of the Calvinist doctrine: Perseverance of the Saints or Eternal Security. This doctrine states that no matter what, someone who is God's chosen/elect cannot "lose their salvation" and will always come back to God.

The beginning lyrics seem to make it clear that the character in this song is trying to run away. The question is: from what? My answer: from God. He even calls this running away foolishness. Indeed, this is what running from God appears like to the Christian believer because after returning, he sees how stupid running away in the first place was.

Often these theological doctrines become very academic and detached from the real world. This song seems to demonstrate the anguish of a Christian rebelling from God. He tries to leave, but he never really can. He finds he knows now way to do it, and so he finds his solace in God's love which has no end.
