My first impression of this song was that it was indeed of an emotionless human. If you need a hint, the lines:
It's automatic,
watching faces I don't know
Erase the face of you.
It seems though as if other people influence who this song is directed to( who bill is speaking to)
but they don't seem to care how they are affected by others. They might have been different in the past (erase the face of you).
this leaves the teller of this story heartbroken yet still attached (why do i keep loving you?)
